Have you ever visited a website where you keep clicking on
links, hoping you are going to find that information you’re
looking for, only to be led to more pages of links. It gets
frustrating and visitors often leave without finding what they
were looking for. That is not good for you our your visitor. The
answer is to have a clean, simple website navigation scheme that
is as clear and obvious as possible.
There are several schools of thought on the best website
navigational design. I don’t believe there is any one
”best” design; Your navigation model depends on your website
and its content and is often a combination of two or more
designs. We will examine three different website navigation
methods and see how they work. They are:
Linear navigation is used for a website where you want
the visitor to go from one step to another in a particular
order. This is usually used within a website but seldom as a
stand alone design. The idea here is that the visitor follows
the pages in a predefined order or sequence that you determine.
This is particularly usefull for tutorials. But, it also has
many other uses.
The database or grid design of website navigation is made
up of multiple main divisions and each division is linked to its
own database. This type of navigation can be used effectively
when large amounts of data are required in the website design.
With database navigation the visitor begins by selecting the
main heading that best serves their purpose. From there they can
drill down deeper and deeper into the selected database.
The hierarchical design goes from the general to the
specific; from a home page to main sections to subsections and
databases. A visitor could easily go from the home page to other
areas of the website and back again. The goal of any
hierarchical navigational system is to offer the user a clear
and simple way to access all pages in a site.
Note: you don’t want to put a direct link to everything on your
website on any single page. Your website links should progress
through several levels branching out as they go. Too many links
to choose from and your visitors often won’t know what to click
on.
As I said earlier, many websites are a combination of
navigational models and you will have to determine which method
works best for your web pages. It is important to have a clear
idea of your navigational system before you organize your
website. Help your visitors find the information they need with
the least number of clicks. This will also serve you in creating
your site theme.
Website Theme
To enhance navigation every website should have some type of
theme - a way of giving your site an identifying look. This can
be through the use of a unique logo, a particular color
combination or a recognizable idea such as gardening or pets.
Let’s take a look at the theme of the website.
If you have chosen a title for your website or business, think
about what theme would compliment that title. Let your
imagination take over here and think of several ideas and write
them down. If you don’t have a title or name chosen, think of
the content, graphics and/or photos you’re going to include on
your site. Deciding on a theme might help you come up with a
unique name.
A theme can be obvious . . . such as a greenhouse using
gardening tools, flowers, etc. Or it can be a metaphor. For
example, a website about babies could also use a ”gardening”
theme. The metaphors of seedlings, growth, nurturing, feeding
and caring for tender plants would translate very well. When the
theme is a particular color or color combination, the links,
buttons and graphics should all reflect that color theme. If a
logo is used as the theme, that logo should be incorporated on
every page.
What you are doing, with a theme, is providing cohesiveness to
your site - letting visitors know they are still in the same
place no matter what section they are viewing. Web users don’t
like the feeling of being ”lost” and will leave a site if they
feel they don’t know where they are or how to find information.
Combing your theme and navigation scheme is the way professional
webmasters create their sites. You should too!

I had a client say something to me the other day that I thought was rather interesting. He mentioned that he almost considers SEO as a marketing expense even though its really a web expense. It was then that I realized that many people still do not consider what they do with their website as part of their marketing plan but as, well, just something else.
I think this is most obvious when you consider how little many are willing to spend on their website once they get past the design stage. I’ve dealt with client after client that had no problem pouring thousands of dollars into their website design but cringe at a few thousand dollars going towards improving traffic and conversions through search engine optimization. Maybe this is why so much more money is spent on PPC (pay-per-click) advertising than on SEO, even though SEO has proven a better return on investment over the long term.
What should be considered a marketing expense in regards to your website?
Web Hosting
Technically, web hosting can be considered a utility expense. It’s just another bill you pay each month to keep things moving forward, right? Maybe. But what happens when your web site goes down because you exceeded your allocated server load due to a big marketing push? Suddenly hundreds, if not thousands, of potential visitors are not able to download your site. How many potential dollars are lost? Web hosting is cheap, but good web hosting might cost a bit more. Ensuring that your site remains accessible despite sudden peaks in traffic can mean the difference of thousands of dollars a month.
Web Design
Just about anybody can build a good looking web site, but does the artistic team behind the web site know how to assemble the pieces in a way that generates maximum conversions? You don’t know? Well, you should. Colors, images, navigation and text placement (among many other factors) all play a role in how you are able to convert your visitors into buyers. Great looking sites can still be poor performers from a usability and conversion perspective. By far one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to profit from
articles is to create your own article directory but NOT in the
way the general crowd are doing it. I’m talking about NICHE
article directories such as a Home Improvement Directory, Health
Directory, etc.
Why Niche?
Because everyone and their dog in recent months have tried to
start their own article directory and almost all of them are
struggling to make them work.
They are all making the same mistake. There are already plenty
of big successful article directories online and competing
against these guys is always going to be tough work.
But going niche gives you the edge.
My reasoning behind this is the same as in any over saturated
market.
Take the popular field of online dating. There are already very
established and successful dating sites online that have
virtually cornered the market and any newcomers struggle to even
make a dent.
But those who have gone Niche are succeeding. Dating sites have
sprung up for Christians, Jews, Gays, Horse Lovers and so on.
Some have succeeded going what I call sub-niche: For example
within the Christian niche there are sites for Catholics,
Pentecostals, etc.
I hope you see what I mean by going niche and with this concept
in mind my private label articles concentrate on niches such as
home improvement which in turn has thousands of sub-niches.
By joining a private label article membership you receive 200
brand new articles every month that you can expand your article
directory with. If you stick with it in one year you would have
an article directory website consisting of a minimum of 2400
pages.
Every one of those pages earning income from Google Adsense, or
from affiliate programs or capturing email addresses for your
list.
An even more important advantage of an article directory with
your private label articles is in the fact that you can add your
own resource box to each and every article.
What does this mean?
It means everytime another webmaster uses your articles they are
linking back to your websites increasing your search engine

It seems like a pretty easy question to answer, but you’d be surprised at how many times the answer doesn’t turn out the way you might think.
Several years ago a client contracted with us because they were dissatisfied with their current website and wanted one that they could easily update themselves.
When we started to work on their website we discovered several things. Their previous Webmaster had created their logo (they paid him to create it), which they had on their website, but also on all of their business cards, brochures and on their entire product line.
When they contacted their Webmaster, to let him know that they were going to have their website redone by Archer Strategic Alliances, he told them that he owned the copyright on their logo and that they could no longer use it! It seems that the person who creates a “work of art” owns the copyright to it. They hadn’t thought to specify in their contract with him that they had a perpetual, irrevocable and exclusive right to use it.
Another client had paid a Webmaster to build a website for their in-home care business. The webmaster had done so, but had used a program that wrote the web page’s code in a non-standard manner. It worked on one browser - Internet Explorer - but it didn’t work on Netscape. Then the Webmaster wanted to get paid additional amounts to modify the code.
Recently a new client contracted to have their website re-done. While gathering the information necessary, we discovered that their previous Webmaster had registered the client’s Domain Name - their “www” - in HIS name, and that he was the owner of that Domain Name. It didn’t matter that the Domain Name was the same as their business name - he OWNED it!
Fortunately, he was an ethical Webmaster who had registered it in his own name just for the convenience of doing so and to be sure that the client knew when to renew the name.
You can check the ownership of your domain name by going to a “Whois” database. We use www.BetterWhois.com. You may have to enter a security code which will be provided by the Whois.
You should be able to see Domain Name’s Owner (called the Registrant), the Registrar (the organization that is used to register the Domain Name), when it was registered and for how long and also the Status. For security’s sake the Status should be “Register-Lock” which will prevent someone from fraudulently transferring your Domain Name.
Another important thing to find out from your Webmaster is if your Domain Name is in an account under your name, and what the Username and Password is. Be sure that it is in your contract that the Webmaster will not change the Username and Password without your written consent. You also need to know WHERE the files for your website are hosted as well as the Username and Password to access or change these files (which may be different from your Domain Name password).
So the question for you is: Who owns your logo or other website artwork and who owns your Domain Name?

When you start a business, the logo should be the least of your worries. A Professional Logo is important, but you should first focus on offering a valuable product or service. Once that’s taken care of, you can then start to think about getting a professional logo.
A well-designed logo establishes your company’s identity and attitude. Let’s say you’re a mechanic. People want to trust their mechanics. They want to know their vehicles will be well-cared for, and repaired by a real professional. Imagine you’re faced with two mechanics, and must choose one based only on his or her logo.
One mechanic’s logo consists of a wrench being held securely in a pair of strong hands. The other mechanic’s logo consists of a teddy bear dipping a wrench into a jar of honey. Based on their logos, which one would you choose? Although you know nothing about either mechanic, their logos said something to you about their professionalism. You should keep this in mind when designing your logo. Even if you have someone else design it for you, they must understand the image you want to project.
Professional logo design should be professional
As illustrated above, your logo must communicate the correct message. Is your company fun and hip? Or is it serious and sophisticated? If you’re not clear on your message, then your logo won’t serve its purpose. Even if someone else is designing your logo, they must know exactly what image you want to project. This is why hiring a professional logo designer is serious business.
There are plenty of places that offer low-cost logo design services. But how many of those places take time to learn all about you and your business? It’s relatively easy to create a graphic and call it a logo. All you need is some clip art, a graphics program, the ability to draw, and some free time. That’s the easy part. The hard part is successfully communicating the correct message with what you create.
If you hire someone to design your logo, make sure the person takes time to learn about you and your business. Think about it. How can anyone who knows nothing about your business design a logo that will correctly represent you? The answer is they can’t. If you take time to research logo case studies, you’ll find it often takes ten or twenty initial designs before the best design comes along. Good logo design isn’t a piece of cake, and it takes time.
Companies with well-known logos, such as Nike or McDonalds, paid a lot for them. They also put a lot of time and money into marketing. Even if you can’t afford to hire a professional branding company, make sure a lot of thought goes into your logo. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars, and let’s be honest, not many small businesses have that kind of money to spend. However, even a cheap logo should accurately represent your business. After all, it’s more than just a pretty picture.

In this article we will be looking at why you should keep your web page size small.
As any good webmaster knows you should keep the web page size small, but why? It’s really simple, both spiders and visitors hate web pages that take forever to load because it’s harder to spider the web page or for the visitor they just don’t have time to wait for your web page to come up, after all most web sites are not that great, so why wait if your the visitor?
You should keep images down in size, the best way to do this is with image compressors. Image compressors will crush the size to make it load faster, but there is a down side to using image compressors because they can make the image colors look like they are out of place and horrible looking. The best way to prevent this is by only doing this to images that are not photos instead this should be used on art work images and try to use the image compressors on images that are smaller, so it’s harder to see the image colors out of place.
A web page should use more HTML than images because this helps cut down the size of your web page. Web pages also should not be too wide or long. Instead cut the web page into two or three web pages, this will also help your visitors not to be forced to scroll down the web page to much and help them scan (Most surfers scan pages for the info they are looking for.) the page better to find the information the visitor is most interested in.
Flash can really slow web pages down even worse robots can’t read Flash and if your visitors don’t have high speed (Most Internet users still use dial up.) Internet it can take forever to load, like I said at the top who is going to wait to just see your web page when they can visit someone else’s site with almost the same information as your sites? Flash really looks great and can really make your site look outstanding, but there are other ways to make your site look great without Flash. If you have to use Flash try to make/get one that loads fast on dial up and don’t use a lot of it on your web site.
Java scripts can put a major load on your server and slow it down. Robots can’t read Java scripts and robots dislike Java scripts. What makes me mad about some web designers is when they use Java clocks, if the visitors need to know what time it is they can look at the clock on the left side of their computer and even if the computer doesn’t have one they can look at the clock in their house, it’s that simple with the Java clocks you don’t need one on your site!
You should try to keep your web page size between 10K and at the most 30K, so both the spiders are happy and most important your visitors are happy.
